The numbers are in, and Harry Stone is rocking!

As Harry Stone’s students and staff continue their journey toward excellence, they have hit a number of truly significant landmarks.

Note: This is my interpretation of the data, and may contain inaccuracies. At the bottom are links to the raw data for those interested.

Our students’ STAAR results from 2017 testing (2016-17 End of Course tests) place Harry Stone at or above the top 10% mark for all schools in the district in most STAAR test areas, from 3rd grade through 8th grade.

For 4th and 5th grades, there were significant year over year improvements. The 4th grade hit 3rd or 4th in the district on all tests, with jump in Reading of 28% of students on Met Standard (more than doubled the year before) and 22% on Mastered, in Math of 37% on Met and 31% on Mastered, and in Writing of 32% on Met. The 5th grade made 6th and 7th in Reading and Math. They also had strong improvements, with Reading Mastered improving by 21% of the students, Math Mastered by 26%, and Science Met by 26%.

The middle school group really shone, ranking 1st in the district in a number of areas:

  • 6th Grade Math
  • 7th Grade Reading
  • 7th Grade Writing
  • 8th Grade Reading
  • 8th Grade Math (which is actually Stone’s 7th Grade)

The middle school’s results also showed a number of areas of steady or significant improvement year-to-year, and on those test where they didn’t hit the top slot they were solidly ranked in with Dallas’s other Magnet middle schools.

Texas Employment Agency also just released results for the Preliminary 2017 Accountability Ratings, and Harry Stone’s elementary has 5 of the 6 possible Distinctions, and the middle school got 7 of 7, one of only 30 at all levels in all of DISD, and only 400 in Texas!

To our students, teachers, and staff: These results show the entire district that you are great. We applaud you. Keep it up, and keep striving for excellence.

HSMA to compete in Music Memory event

Throughout the year, all 4th and 5th graders have been listening to a variety of music including ballet, opera, orchestra, band, and piano solos. They have been learning about the different instruments, composers, and history of each piece. After taking quizzes and a final exam on 16 specific pieces, 12 students (6 from each grade) placed in the top of their class (combined music, piano, and orchestra students).

These students will travel to the Meyerson Symphony Center on Tuesday, April 25, 2017 to hear the Dallas Symphony Orchestra perform live excerpts from these pieces in which they will identify the name and composer. Each team will compete against the other groups from their grade level across the district for the chance to win first place and a trophy. They will even get to hear two full pieces for a mini concert along with the opportunity to compete. This is the first year HSMA will go to this competition!

Who: The 6 top 4th/5th grade music students

What: Music Memory Competition against other 4th/5th graders from DISD

When: Tuesday, April 25, 2017 from 12:30 pm – 6:00 pm
